ISO 14001:2026 is now the current version of ISO 14001. If your organisation holds an existing ISO 14001 certification, or is working towards one, you need to know what has changed, what is required of you, and what to do next.
What is the ISO 14001:2026 standard?
ISO 14001 is the international standard that sets out the requirements for an effective environmental management system (EMS). It gives organisations a structured framework for identifying and managing their environmental impacts, meeting their legal obligations, and continually improving their environmental performance.
ISO 14001:2026 is the most recent edition of the standard, updating the previous ISO 14001:2015 version. It reflects how the expectations placed on organisations have evolved, and signals a shift in approach towards a broader, clearer, and more integrated approach to environmental obligation.
What is the difference between ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 14001:2026?
ISO 14001:2015 had a focus on climate change, whereas the focus in ISO 14001:2026 is ensuring that obligations are clear and that biodiversity, resource use, and lifecycle considerations are embedded in the EMS.
As noted above, ISO 14001:2026 is now the current version of the standard, and the 2015 edition has been withdrawn.
General changes from the previous edition include:
-
- Updates to sections on risks and opportunities
- Updates to sections on lifecycle considerations
- Addition of other environmental considerations, including biodiversity and resource consumption
- Updates to sections on processes
- Updates to sections around the needs and expectations of interested parties
- Updates to sections on roles, responsibilities, and authorities
- Updates to sections on planning
- Updates to sections on performance evaluation
- Updates to requirements for internal auditing
- Updates to requirements for management reviews
- Changes to wording, headings, and section order throughout to make obligations even clearer
Has ISO 14001:2026 Been Released? What Is the Transition Period?
ISO 14001:2026 was released on 30 April 2026, and ISO 14001:2015 has now been withdrawn. This means that by the time of each organisation’s next recertification, it should be against the 2026 standard.
Organisations who are on their journey (or thinking of starting their journey) towards ISO 14001 accreditation should be certified against the 2026 edition from the outset.

Organisations with existing ISO 14001 certifications have a transition period to align their EMS with the new obligations and requirements. Those organisations should be making positive steps towards alignment already, starting with a gap analysis to understand where their EMS stands against the new standard.
Understanding your organisation’s current status of compliance with ISO 14001:2026 is the only way to work out the next steps and to build a realistic, evidence-led path towards full compliance.
How can iCOR help with ISO 14001:2026?
iCOR is purpose-built EHS legal compliance software, and it specifically supports the ISO 14001:2026 clauses that organisations find most difficult to manage.
Clause 6.1.3 - Compliance Obligations
Organisations are required to have access to, and maintain awareness of, environmental legislation. Answering iCOR’s simple audit builds your organisation’s bespoke compliance register automatically.
Clause 6.1.4 - Risks and Opportunities
Organisations must consider risks and opportunities relating to their environmental aspects, compliance obligations, and other requirements. iCOR demonstrates this consideration through its self-audit tool, legal register, aspects register, and timeline.
Clause 6.1.5 - Planning Action
iCOR determines compliance with your obligations and allows actions to be raised and completed within the system, ensuring all audit results are actioned and evidence of action taken is timestamped.
Section 7 - Support
This section relates to resource allocation, competency, awareness, and communication, all of which are supported via iCOR’s Action Planning function and team collaboration tools. Solutions for compliance gaps often include training and communication strategies, which iCOR helps you plan, assign, and track.
Clause 9.1.1 - Monitoring, Measuring, Analysis and Evaluation
iCOR’s Conformity Tracker visualises your audit results so you can interpret your current status of compliance at a glance, showing areas of conformity, non-conformity, and open and closed actions. The timeline function tracks progress over time.
Clause 9.1.2 - Evaluation of Compliance
Your answers to iCOR’s simple questionnaire build a bespoke register of compliance statements that reflect your organisation’s specific processes which can then be presented to ISO auditors. We recommend that one audit is completed every six months.
Clause 10.2 - Non-conformity and Corrective Action
iCOR identifies your compliance status and automatically transposes any non-conformities into the action planner, where site managers can assign actions, set deadlines, and monitor progress. A resolved non-conformity becomes a compliance statement on your register. The incident reporting function also allows environmental concerns to be raised and addressed outside of the structured audit cycle.
Clause 10.1 - Continual Improvement
Continual improvement requires taking action to correct mistakes, innovate, and reorganise what is not working. iCOR supports this through internal audits, compliance evaluation, performance assessment, and management reviews; all within a single platform.
What Is My First Step Towards ISO 14001:2026 Transition?
The most important thing you can do right now is understand where you stand. That means undertaking a gap analysis: a structured review of your current EMS against the requirements of ISO 14001:2026. Having completed a gap analysis, you will know exactly what needs to change and how to prioritise improvements.
iCOR is offering a ISO 14001:2026 gap analysis package: a structured, expert-led review of your current EMS against ISO 14001:2026, so you have a clear, evidenced view of your gaps and a practical path to compliance.
